The Rope Dart
Although the use of this weapon can be learned by people of any age, size and shape, it has some level of complexity in its usage. Thus, of the Chinese Martial Arts weapons, it is one of those regarded with high esteem. One must practice and master it’s use so a to develop enough skill to handle it well.
A story has it that its first use dates back to Western Han Dynasty (206
BC - 24 AD). Another story dates it back to Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). No matter which story is right, one thing was certain, it was used to have the advantage of projectile weapon – to hit the enemy from afar. The difference was that, the rope allowed the the dart to be retrieved and reused instantly.
The Rope dart has three essential parts – the rope, the dart, and the silk. Each may vary in sizes and weight depending on the technique employed but they are always proportional to each other. To avoid being slowed down, some criteria are good to follow though. For example, for the rope, it is best that it’s flexible, doesn’t come off twisted and the thickness is just enough and not overly thick. For the darts, light ones are utilized for fast techniques, and heavier ones are used for slow lethal techniques. As for the silk which may seem for decorative purpose only, actually helps in controlling the dart’s movement.
